Navi Mumbai: Sister City of Palava
Navi Mumbai is spread across 344 square kilometers is a satellite city to Mumbai. Navi Mumbai started taking shape in 1970 with Maharashtra government pushing for a city on mainland of Maharashtra to decongest Mumbai. In 1971, City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) was formed by the state government for the planning, development and implementation of Navi Mumbai.
Navi Mumbai being the world’s largest planned township has a total of 14 nodes in it. These 14 nodes were developed in a phase manner. Initially CIDCO developed Vashi, CBD Belapur and Nerul with housing, schools and roads. Once the harbor line was started between Mankhurd and Vashi in 1991, a lot of population started shifting to Navi Mumbai. The Vashi bridge was thrown open in 1998 and Airoli Bridge was thrown open on 1999, Then CIDCO started planning and development of other nodes like Airoli, Kopar Khairne, Kharghar, Kamothe and New Panvel. Currently CIDCO is developing nodes like Ulwe, Taloja, and Dronagiri. It has various infrastructure projects in hand for development. Like the Sion Panvel 6+6 lane expansion project, Navi Mumbai International Airport, Another sea link near Vashi Bridge, Ghatkopar Ghansoli bridge, Coastal Road from Airoli to JNPT near Uran, Seawoods Integrated Commercial Complex and Railway Station, Sewri Nhava Seva Link Road etc.
Currently, the population of Navi Mumbai is 11 lakhs counted in the recent 2001 census. CIDCO is projecting this population will increase to 20 lakhs by 2025 due to the major shift of people from Mumbai. Even though the planning and development authority is CIDCO, all the major development in Navi Mumbai is done on the basis of public private partnership (PPP). Initially all residential projects in Navi Mumbai was done by CIDCO but as the city expanded CIDCO started giving the development to private builders. Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) is the civic governance authority of Navi Mumbai. NMMC takes control of the civic maintenance and the public transport in the city called as Navi Mumbai Municipal Transport (NMMT).
Palava city is very close to Navi Mumbai. Palava is a city developed with all modern amenities on the outskirts of Mumbai. The nearby area to Palava is Mahape and Taloja in Navi Mumbai. Mahape and Taloja are just 6 kilometer from Palava City. Both Palava and Navi Mumbai are satellite city of Mumbai, so they can be considered as Sister Cities. By 2025, Palava will be have a total population of 5 lakhs and will be largest planned city in India by a private developer.
